Advantages and disadvantages of TAC lens material

TAC lenses are made of triacetate cellulose, or TAC for short. This is a thermoplastic with good optical properties and hardness, a light transmittance of up to 93%, and a density between 1.23-1.34. TAC lenses are usually made of three layers of composite material, with the center layer being TAC material and the two sides covered with ultra-thin outer layers of composite material.

  • Advantages of TAC lens:

1. Thin and light: TAC lenses are very thin and light compared to other materials, which makes the lenses more comfortable and does not bring extra burden to the wearer. In addition, lightweight lenses also help reduce the swing of glasses during exercise and improve the comfort of the wearer.

2. High light transmittance: TAC lenses have excellent optical properties and can provide higher light transmittance. When light passes through TAC lenses, there is almost no scattering and absorption, allowing the wearer to have a clearer and brighter vision. This is particularly beneficial in outdoor activities or low-light conditions.

3. Shock resistance: TAC lenses are more impact-resistant than ordinary plastic lenses and can better resist collisions and impacts. When the lenses are impacted by external forces, they can effectively disperse the impact force and reduce the risk of lens breakage. This makes them an ideal choice for outdoor activity glasses such as sports glasses and sunglasses.

4. UV protection: TAC lenses can effectively block harmful ultraviolet (UV) radiation and protect the eyes from damage. This is one of the basic functions of sunglasses.

  • Disadvantages of TAC lens:

1. Easy to deform: TAC lenses may be more easily deformed than other materials. In high or low temperature environments, or when exposed to heat sources, the lenses may deform, affecting visual quality.

2. Not resistant to high temperatures: TAC lenses tend to soften in high temperature environments, which may cause the lenses to deform, crack, or lose their original excellent optical properties. Therefore, be especially careful in high temperature environments.

3. Not resistant to solvents: TAC lenses are sensitive to certain organic solvents and chemicals, so avoid using these solvents when cleaning the lenses, otherwise it may cause corrosion or damage to the lens surface.
