Advantages and disadvantages of AC lens material

AC is the abbreviation of Acrylate. The AC resin used to make lenses here refers to polymethyl methacrylate, codenamed PMMA, commonly known as organic glass. It is the most excellent and reasonably priced variety among synthetic transparent materials to date.

  • Advantages of AC Lens:

1. Strong light transmittance: PMMA is currently the best polymer transparent material, with a visible light transmittance of up to 92%, which is higher than the transmittance of glass. PMMA can effectively block the following two types of light.

(1) Ultraviolet light

Quartz can completely transmit ultraviolet light, but it is expensive. Ordinary glass can only transmit 0.6% of ultraviolet light, but PMMA can transmit 73%. PMMA cannot filter out ultraviolet light (UV). Ultraviolet light can penetrate PMMA. Some manufacturers coat the surface of PMMA to increase its ultraviolet light filtering effect and properties.

(2) Infrared light

PMMA allows infrared light with a wavelength less than 2800nm to pass through. Longer wavelength IR, less than 25000nm, can basically be blocked. There are special colored PMMA that allow specific wavelengths of IR to pass through while blocking visible light.

2. Wear resistance: Compared with PC materials, AC materials are more wear-resistant, less prone to scratches, and less susceptible to oil pollution.

  • However, AC material also has some disadvantages, such as:

1. The texture is hard and prone to cracks or deformation.

2. It’s also heavy and has high requirements for the frame, which must have sufficient load-bearing capacity.

3. The scratch resistance and heat resistance of AC lenses are not as good as TAC lenses.

4. As a type of resin lens, its disadvantages are also high thermal expansion coefficient, poor thermal conductivity, low softening temperature, easy deformation, thus affecting optical performance.
